Sepura

Project

Smart Composter

Year

2019-2024

Client

Sepura was founded by Victor, an entrepreneur from Victoria who reimagined the garburator into an eco-friendly device capable of diverting solid waste from the municipal sewer system by separating food scraps tossed in the sink from liquids and collecting them for composting.

Purpose

Victor had a clear vision for his product, and a technical background in engineering, but recognized he needed support with industrial design to create a beautiful product people would want to have in their home, and detailed engineering support to make it manufacturable.

Disciplines

Hand drawn conceptual and industrial design sketches of miscellaneous objects
Conceptual Design
Gears and a drafting pencil resting on a mechanical engineering blueprint
Mechanical Engineering
Circuit board assembly resting on an electrical circuit schematic blueprint
Electrical Engineering
Lines of multicolored computer code on a curved monitor fading off into the distance
Firmware Development
Man holding a tablet monitoring data from manufacturing equipment seen in the background
Prototype + Mfg Support

Our Role

Working in close collaboration with the teams at Sepura and Card79, our role in this project was to take the high level conceptual design and perform all detailed mechanical engineering design, electronics development and firmware coding to build a working prototype in time for exhibiting at CES.

Odor Sealing Door

A key design requirement for this project was the design of an odor seal to prevent food scrap smells from escaping.

Level Indication

A series of LEDs on the upper front panel indicate how full the bin is to alert users when in need of emptying. Smart electronics prevent over-filling.

Solids and Liquids Separation

Precision separation technology captures all solids that enter the system while allowing liquids to flow down the drain as normal. An auger then pushes the solids to the front of the unit where they are collected in a removable bin.

Compost Collection

Collected solid food scraps are seamlessly collected in a sealed, stick-free container. Innovative carbon technology blocks odors from entering your kitchen, and a patented design stops fruit flies from calling your sink home.
